- treating someone with respect has less than nothing to do with behaving “politely” towards them. it really doesn’t. thinking it does is what leads people to say shit like, “when people show up to class in sweats with their hair unbrushed, they are being disrespectful to everyone around them!”
- and to people going about their whole lives politely treating people like crap and never realizing they’ve done something wrong
- it’s what allows polite old lady racists to go along their lives not being called out because hey, at least she was polite about it!
- and it’s what makes otherwise good-thinking people tell me I’m doing something wrong when I, totally respectfully, say, “hey, you’re being a fucking jerk,” to someone who is in fact being a fucking jerk
