something I always wonder as an activist

Where does the hate come from? The cis people who go around policing trans* or genderqueer or other non-cis identities - why? I wonder this not just because it’s wrong and hateful and ignorant and dangerous, but because it’s so fucking pointless. Why do people care so much? Why do bigots care so damn much about non-cis gender identities? Why? Why do you fucking care?

Just like with any of this same policing bullshit, with the anti-marriage-equality set and the women-all-need-to-shave set and I just don’t get it in such a fundamental way. That’s why I think words like transphobia and homophobia are valuable - the way these people manifest their hate and anxiety about these issues suggests that there is a real, pathological fear bred and kept alive by our fucked up society that is making them invest so much time and negativity into worrying about someone else’s gender or pronouns or marriage or what-have-you. They must just be terrified that someone might be different than they are and get away with it.
