things that caught me the most about the stories in spiritual midwifery:

so much “smooching” going on during labor. seems like it’s pretty standard for Farm midwives to recommend sexytime with your partner to progress labor. I’d heard about that before in very vague terms as something that could possibly help labor, but never seen it discussed so frankly and matter-of-factly as par for the course, from midwives’ and birthing couples’ viewpoints.
the treatment of the Old Order Amish births, especially how much cultural sensitivity Ina May demonstrates towards them; like suggesting one couple “speak Amish to one another in private” and saying “whispered love poetry and sweet thoughts could help things along” (as opposed to what she’d say to the hippies, that the mother should “come on strong to her man” and that “lovemaking helps get the baby out as well as put it in” etc) to express the same birthing principles in a culturally appropriate way
up-front stories about hospital transfers and episiotomies/tearing (instead of pretending they never happen at midwife-attended births, talking about how the midwives would know it was going to be necessary, and how, for the women who did have them, it wasn’t the end of the world or all that bad really, just worth making sure it was necessary before doing it)
that the tone of stories that end in cesarean section don’t suddenly change to “and then it was all horrible and sterile and a nightmare and I never bonded with my precious baby!” instead, the hospital laboring process and surgery itself are still described in the book’s hippie spiritual terms like heavy, psychadelic (yep), tripping, ecstatic, something new to integrate just like the rest of labor, and often “getting telepathic” with the nurses and doctors on call just as much as with the midwives. it doesn’t make it seem like a travesty if a birth does wind up taking place in L&D or the operating room

pregnancy is such a crazy fucking concept to me, for real. i am still so astounded by the whole reproduction process. we just. MAKE. other HUMANS. IN OURSELVES. HOLY SHIT. blows me away.

right?! the process is so bizarre. whenever I see a pregnant person I try to be respectful and not stare or anything but I get so immediately fascinated like “oh my god there is a fetus in there growing and moving around and learning how to be alive as we speak”

I am also super fascinated by the concept of the “fourth trimester” and how newborns still basically need constant body contact and swaddling and are pretty much just still fetuses for a few months, but outside a womb so someone besides the person who grew it can take care of it

oh, and the fact that every single person alive was grown in a womb and lived inside of another human being’s body for the first stages of their life

I finished the birth stories part of Spiritual Midwifery (I always take non-fiction reads suuuuper slow; birth stories is the first third or so of the book). I shouldn’t even be reading it, it’s making me sad that I am nowhere close to a life situation where I could sanely have a baby. too bad it’s so fascinating, I’m such a sucker for pregnancy and babies. I finished my spontaneous reread of the lovely bones today, too

I think I could call them the driving force behind fandom and put up a convincing argument. Just think about it: what fandoms have driven America crazy in the last decade? Could anyone dissuade me from saying that they were Harry Potter, Twilight and the Hunger Games? “Avatar” may have put butts in theater seats, but you don’t hear about it… ever. No one is immersed in the world of “Avatar” except James Cameron and people who enjoy wearing Na’vi Zentai suits. “The Avengers” was pretty darn huge and, if Tumblr is any indication, a whopping portion of the people driving that fandom online do not possess a Y chromosome. Women engage in fandom to levels that men do not. When women get behind something, their sheer numbers and passion force it into the mainstream. That’s why you can name the actor who plays that werewolf kid in “Twilight” and probably sing at least the chorus to one Justin Bieber song. What do tween boys like? I have no clue. Sports? Probably sports.”
